When did passports, national ID's, human documentation 1st start?

It's funny. I'm 59 and my birth cert. is a cheap piece of paper filled in lite pencil that anybody can erase. We all see cowboy, pirate, explorer, historical movies that people are always travelling everywhere. The colonists and founding fathers , as well as the Indians(cowboys) always going to Canada, Mexico, back to England, etc. We never see anybody clearing customs, any type of border security. I'm from Brooklyn and travelled quite a bit in US Army and on my on and fake ID's were rampant all over the world. A real joke. But, when did documentation really start? Any info much appreciated.
